Ginger is a perennial herb with reed-like stems, yellow flowers and purple markings.  The stems grow from the thick tuberous rhizome and both the essential oil and the spice come from this.  Ginger originated from India but its now grown all over South East Asia.

Ginger is a very stimulating oil which has a very beneficial effect on the digestive, muscular and nervous systems.  The earliest recorded use of ginger is c. 500BC from Confucius who used ginger to treat rheumatism, toothache and malaria.

Ginger stimulates and warms the digestive system so is a good first choice for poor digestion, wind, bloating.  Clinical trials have indicated that ginger is effective against nausea - perfect for morning sickness, motion sickness or post operation. Its a circulatory stimulant and its warming properties also make it good for cold hands and feet. Its also a heart tonic so one to consider for cardiac fatigue and angina.

Ginger is also a good oil to include in massage blends to help rheumatism, arthritis and muscular pain.  (Although its not best to use if muscle is inflamed).   Ginger oil is recommended for catarrh, coughs, sinisitis and sore throats and blends well with Lemon for this purpose.  On a psychological note ginger is recommended to help increase motivation and inner strength so if you are suffering from apathy, confusion and indecision this could be the oil for you.
