Sandalwood is an important essential oil - known for its ability to help with stress-related conditions, the respiratory system, and its ability to blend and harmonise with other essential oils. Its one of the key oils for meditation and is often used in perfumery.

Sandalwood is extracted from the sandalwood evergreen tree. It takes 60 years for a tree to reach the maturity required for it to be able to be cut for essential oils. The wood itself is prized for making furniture, sacred religious objects, carvings and incense sticks. Hence it is an expensive oil.  On the plus side, this is one oil that matures well and, like patchouli, the aroma improves with age. This oil is from managed plantations in Indonesia following strict regulations.  

Sandalwood can also be used for treating varicose veins and the lymphatic system - it is thought that its anti-inflammatory properties are beneficial for treating slow blood flow in the veins and also slow lymph movement. 

It can have a relaxing effect on nerves, and could be used in calming agitated states which would lead to conditions such as headache, insomnia and nervous tension.  

It is recommended for the treatment of respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis - it has a soothing effect on irritated membranes.

Sandalwood is also recommended for the treatment of urinary tract infections such as cystitis and gonorrhoea -  blending with Bergamot makes an effective blend to treat this. 

In skincare, Sandalwood is soothing, cooling and moisturising and is beneficial for dry skin conditions.  It is also useful in the treatment of eczema and psoriasis and also for the treatment of oily skin and acne.
